The Taylor Ace is widely regarded as one of the most versatile and popular lawn bowls for both indoor and outdoor surfaces.
I played with Taylor Aces for the best part of 15 years. They served me well.
The Ace is a great bowl.

Surprisingly, the Thomas Taylor website tells you very little about the Ace – not even the bias of the bowl. But you only need to look at the players who play with or have played with the Ace, to know that you won’t go far wrong with this bowl. (Stewart Anderson, Darren Burnett, David Gourlay and Andy Thomson to name a few).
I gave up on the Ace when I started playing indoor; I found it just a little too ‘swingy’ for me. (Cue the Tiger Pro which I could play with with indoor and outdoor).
If you are new to the game I think the Ace is the ideal bowl to start with.
Key Features & Performance
- Mid-bias bowl, often described as a “dual-purpose” bowl suited for all-year-round play.
- Smooth, consistent arc to the jack with no significant “hook” or sharp turn at the end, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced players.
- Suitable for all positions, from lead to skip.
- Available in Pro-Grip as standard or Extreme Grip, a deeper, more pronounced, and oblong-shaped dimple grip introduced to offer better control for players in cold or wet conditions.
- Wider drawing arc than the Taylor Lazer, Vector or Blaze, making it better for outdoor play while still being very competitive indoors.
The Taylor Ace is praised for its reliability and consistent performance, with many top players recommending it for its ability to handle both fast indoor carpets and slower, windy outdoor greens. It is frequently cited as a top choice for players wanting one set of bowls for the whole year.
